Funding a Cure at the Rita Hayworth Alzheimer’s Association Gala
The Event: Thirty years of funding research into the cure to a devastating illness culminated in a grand anniversary gala inside the Hilton Chicago on May 13 where more than 850 supporters came together to take a stand against Alzheimer’s disease.
Founded by Princess Yasmin Aga Khan in honor of her mother, the legendary Hollywood icon, Rita Hayworth who succumbed to Alzheimer’s late in life, the event has raised to date $71 million dollars towards finding a cure.
Cause Célèbre: “Thanks to all of you who have given so generously over the last thirty years,” said Princess Aga Khan. “Chicago you are amazing.”
Every 66 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s. Today, more than five million Americans are living with the disease, a figure that is expected to rise to 16 million by 2050.
“Everyone with a brain is at risk for Alzheimer’s disease,” said Corey Huth of Hinsdale, steering committee member. “Everyone should be conscious of and aware that they can be part of fighting the fight and finding a cure.”
Personally affected by the disease through a currently-afflicted close friend, Jon Harris of Northbrook reprised his role of event emcee and auctioneer for the second year in a row.
“We have come a long way in research and treatment and yet help is needed now more than ever before,” said Harris.
The sixth leading cause of death in the United States, Alzheimer’s has increased by 89% since 2000 and today kills more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.
“We will live in a world without Alzheimer’s but it is going to take dedication with every person…to end this horrible disease,” said Reagan Hogerty of La Grange, board member.
Bottom Line: The event raised $1.1 million for the Alzheimer’s Association to fund further research into a cure.
